Turning It Around

I’ve always believed that we learn more from our mistakes than from our successes, in part because we think more about the errors we make. After all, have you ever lain awake all night replaying some triumph? No, we usually reserve bouts of insomnia for reviewing some gaffe we’ve made—like the nightmare job interview or that time in first grade when . . . well, you remember.

So how does the Inner Bitch handle a mistake? Let me think about that.

Grace under Fire

Mistakes, obviously, are going to happen, and your Inner Bitch wants you to deal with them immediately. There’s nothing to be gained (and a lot to lose) by pretending that, as I once did, you forgot to add in an entire month’s expenditures when you were coming up with next year’s budget. In a situation like this, it’s imperative that you run the numbers again and issue a revision as quickly—and gracefully—as possible.
